Maverick Park

San Antonio, Texas

Reimagining of an inner city park neighborhood along Broadway and adjacent to the famed San Antonio Riverwalk. This project was part of a competition that encouraged ideas that would revitalize a blighted and underutilized section of the Broadway corridor to help connect the city’s museum district with downtown. The existing park was surrounded by empty and abandoned car lots and 1960s light industrial warehouses and storefronts. Our approach was to utilize a strategy of incremental small scale development that encouraged the construction of a mix of uses and scales based on proximity to the park, the river, and existing structures. We proposed the inclusion of civic, commercial, and residential structures to front the park and reactivate the space with a variety of occupants. This would provide targeted public investment to encourage private, market-driven investment over time, which in turn would allow the neighborhood to develop its own character as each new building and each new block gets built-out.
